"I had an amazing year meeting people of all ages and all walks of life who are giving their time selflessly to enhance life in their community. High Sheriffs change annually, but ECF provides the year-on-year continuity to keep the Fund running smoothly."Rupert Gosling, High Sheriff 2010
It is estimated that nearly 400,000 people undertake some form of charity or voluntary work in Essex. This dedication and devotion to our communities makes for a healthier and safer society. An important part of the role of the High Sheriff is to recognise and promote the voluntary sector, with particular emphasis on those organisations, which support law and order, and tackle crime and social problems in their communities.
The High Sheriffs’ Fund was established in Essex in 1993 to reward community initiatives that address crime and anti-social behaviour and is managed by ECF. Each year the High Sheriff of Essex makes awards to voluntary groups and gives recognition to those who are tackling local problems. The Awards scheme comprises:
The High Sheriffs’ Certificate encourages local individuals to nominate an individual or a voluntary organisation to receive recognition for their outstanding work promoting crime prevention and community safety. A nomination can be made by submitting the form. To download the form click here.
The High Sheriffs’ Fund supports local community and voluntary organisations seeking financial support and groups can apply for up to £1,000 for projects that will make local people, of all ages, feel safer in their homes, schools, towns and villages. The grant applicant should be a voluntary or community group, working for the benefit of the people in Essex, Southend or Thurrock. Click here for more information on how to apply.
The Volunteer Centre Essex Award encourages volunteers to nominate their voluntary or community group for an award. A cash award of £1,000 is given to the organisation, which best demonstrates the use of good practice in providing encouragement, support, training and supervision to volunteers.
