Dr Geoffrey Sneed Engineering Scholarship

The Dr Geoffrey Sneed Engineering Scholarship provides financial support to sixth form students from across Essex who plan to study Engineering or other STEM subjects at university, helping with living costs so students can focus on their studies.

How the scholarship works 

Awards are made for an initial three-year period, with the potential for review for a fourth year 

  • Funding is paid in termly instalments (September, January and April) 
  • The first payment is made once university attendance is confirmed 
  • Further payments require brief progress updates and confirmation of continued attendance 
  • An end-of-year feedback report is required 

Eligibility criteria 

Applicants must: 

  • Live in Essex or attend an educational institution in Essex 
  • Applications from areas around the East London/Essex border (including Ilford and Romford) will be considered 
  • Be studying A Levels 
  • Intend to progress to university 
  • Plan to study a STEM-based degree, with priority given to Engineering 
  • Priority will be given to students who demonstrate: 
  • Strong academic achievement 
  • Financial need 

Application process 

Stage 1 – School referral 

  • Applications open: February 2026 
  • A referral form must be completed by a teacher or school staff member 
  • Referrals must be submitted by 23 March 2026 

Stage 2 – Student application 

  • Referred students will receive a full application form 
  • Applications must be completed by 9 April 2026 
  • The form will include academic details and information on financial or family circumstances 

Assessment and selection 

Applications are reviewed by an independent panel in May 2026 and assessed on: 

  • Academic merit 
  • Financial need 
  • Commitment to STEM 
  • The potential impact of the scholarship on the student’s education 
  • Further information may be requested if needed.
