Dr Geoffrey Sneed Engineering Scholarship – Applications Now Open

The Dr Geoffrey Sneed Engineering Scholarship supports students studying Engineering or a related engineering degree at university by providing financial support towards living costs throughout their studies.

Applications are open to students in their final year of sixth form or college who are planning to progress to an eligible engineering degree. This includes disciplines such as Biomedical Engineering, Product Design Engineering, Civil Engineering and other engineering-related degree courses. 

The scholarship was established through a gift from the estate of Dr Geoffrey Sneed, an engineer, inventor and educator who dedicated his life to learning, innovation and inspiring others. Throughout his career, he combined academic research, teaching and practical problem-solving, always believing that engineering should be used to improve lives and address real-world challenges. Through this scholarship, his legacy continues by supporting talented young people to pursue engineering degrees and develop the skills needed to shape the future. 

 

How The Scholarship Works:

Awards are made for an initial three-year period, with the potential for review for a fourth year 

  • Funding is paid in termly instalments (September, January and April) 
  • The first payment is made once university attendance is confirmed 
  • Further payments require brief progress updates and confirmation of continued attendance 
  • An end-of-year feedback report is required 

 

Eligibility Criteria 

Applicants must: 

  • Live in Essex or attend an educational institution in Essex 
  • Applications from areas around the East London/Essex border (including Ilford and Romford) will be considered 
  • Be in the final year of studying A Levels 
  • Planning to attend university, starting in September 2027 
  • Plan to study an Engineering or related engineering degree 

Priority will be given to students who demonstrate: 

  • Strong academic achievement 
  • Financial need 

 

Application process 

  • Stage 1 – School referral 

A referral form must be completed by a teacher or school staff member. 

All referrals must be submitted by 16 December 2026. 

  • Stage 2 – Student application 

Referred students will then receive an application form to complete. 

Applications must be completed by 13 January 2027. 

The form will ask you to share information regarding your academic achievements, any extracurricular activities, your family set up and information regarding your financial position. 

All applicants will be invited to attend a short telephone or Microsoft Teams call during the final two weeks of February as part of the application process.

 

Assessment and Selection 

Applications are reviewed by an independent panel in May 2026 and assessed on: 

  • Academic merit
  • Financial need 
  • Commitment to Engineering 
  • The potential impact of the scholarship on the student’s education 
  • Further information may be requested if needed.

Decisions will be communicated in Spring 2027.
