Driving Change through Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

6th October 2023

The 2027 Programme focuses on bringing people from working class backgrounds into the grantmaking sector, and bridging the gap between grant partners and funders.

Our colleague, Frankie Webb-Huseyin joined us in 2022 as part of the Programme to learn about grantmaking and is now a permanent employee.

During her time on the Programme, Frankie and some of her cohort, took part in a final project called the Driving Change Initiative, looking at Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), with the aim that their host organisation would embed this within their values and champion this within the wider grantmaking sector.

The project, which included group discussions, focused on how best to implement good EDI practices and some of the key findings of the project are below:

  • Diversity and Inclusion training should be included as an explicit aspect of long-term strategy.
  • Re-evaluate recruitment practices – ensure there is a diverse staff in both demographics and lived experience. Ensure recruitment is open and transparent.
  • Diversify leadership teams and board of directors.
  • Conduct panel training on what is considered ‘good’ grantmaking.
  • Resources such as Foundation Practice Rating provide insight into how well a Foundation practices diversity, accountability and transparency.
